Order Description
Description: This paper is a claim-driven essay. Remember, a claim can be contested because claims are not self-evident.

Assignment: For this essay, I want you to pick an advertisement from a popular magazine that you feel either exemplifies or contradicts at least some of the fifteen basic appeals of advertising as discussed in Jib Fowles?s article, ?Advertising?s Fifteen Basic Appeals.? *Hint: Pick an advertisement that either incorporates many of the techniques and stereotypes OR purposely attempts to use none of them.

Audience: Your audience is a group of young people who disagree with your perspective on advertising. So, for example, if you decide to claim that advertising uses certain propaganda techniques that influence buyers, then your audience believes that propaganda techniques do not influence buyers. In other words, you are trying to persuade your audience to see your point-of-view.

Requirements: As part of this assignment, you must:

1. Briefly describe the ad you are using. If possible, include the ad in your final paper; however, you should describe the ad with enough detail and accuracy that your reader could ?see? the ad. In other words, you?ll partially be evaluated on how closely the ad description in your paper matches the ad itself.

2. Show how your ad is an example of various propaganda techniques and how it stereotypes certain groups of people OR how it defies these techniques.

3. Make a claim about advertising as whole. Here, I want you to go beyond the ?Advertising is good/bad? mentality, and answer the question ?So what??

4. Be 3-5 typed, double-spaced pages in length.
